Nearly 40 million Americans suffer from sinus problems every year. Sinus pressure headaches can cause fatigue, and prevent you from completing the most common daily tasks. Rather than going to the doctor, and paying for prescription medication, treat your sinus pressure headache with a home remedy.
The Symptoms
Migraine and sinus pressure headaches are commonly confused and misdiagnosed. Make sure that your headache is coming from sinus-related issues, as the following home remedies will not cure a migraine. With a sinus pressure headache, you will feel pressure and pain in your face–most commonly around your eyes, cheeks, teeth and jawline. You will typically have associated sinus symptoms, such as runny nose, coughing, wheezing and/or fatigue.
The Remedy
There are a number of techniques that can relieve a sinus pressure headache, and when two or three of these strategies are combined, the headache can be cured quickly and efficiently. Steam inhalation plays a large role in all sinus-related issues. Stand in a hot shower for five to ten minutes and inhale the steaming vapors. As you inhale, slowly massage your temples. The massage will relax your muscles while the steam opens your nasal passages, allowing you to release some of the sinus pressure.
Anti-bacterial eucalyptus oil is also known to fight cold and sinus symptoms. Purchase a small bottle from your local grocery or vitamin store, and place two to three drops of the oil in your shower. As you breathe in the vapors and oil, you will feel the pressure release.
Prevention
As with most allergies and sinuses, determine what triggers your flare-up. Factors that can trigger inflammation include tobacco smoke, mildew, mold, fungus, dust, pet dander, dairy products, perfume and freshly-mowed grass.
