Advice for Treating Peeling Skin

We lose about 1 1/2 pounds of skin every year. Most people don’t notice the small particles of skin falling off their bodies. Dry skin and sunburns can increase the amount of lost skin. New skin underneath the peeling skin may be red and smooth to the touch.

Brush away peeling and dead skin with a stiff-bristled brush. The brush removes much of the dead skin with light strokes.

Wash skin in lukewarm water with glycerin soap. Glycerin soap helps the skin keep moisture in instead of drying it out like many commercial soaps. Hot water dries skin out.

Pat the skin dry with a towel.

Apply lotion to the area. Thick lotions with oatmeal work best. Unscented lotions won’t irritate the skin. Allow the lotion to soak in.

Apply sunscreen to the spot to prevent further burning or drying out. If going into the cold, cover the affected area.
