Human blood has an ideal pH level that is slightly alkaline, typically about 7.35 to 7.45 on an acidity scale, according to Rense, a website dedicated to healthful diets. Blood pH level is affected by many things including unhealthy diet, emotional stress, toxin overload or immune system malfunctions. All foods fall somewhere on the acidic or alkaline scale, however, most common foods fall on the acidic side of the scale. Alkaline foods may help reduce stomach acid and acid reflux.
Vegetables
Vegetables are some of the most alkaline foods that humans consume. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale and collard greens are highly alkaline. All peppers, mushrooms and and sea vegetables are also alkalizing. Other popular alkalizing vegetables include cucumber, eggplant, garlic, green beans, peas, lettuce, onions, pumpkin, radishes, spirulina, sprouts, watercress and wheat grass.
Fruits
Fruits, like vegetables, are extremely healthful and are non-acidic. Fruits deliver high concentrations of vitamins and essential minerals while reducing your body’s pH level. Some common alkalizing fruits include apples, apricots, avocados, bananas, blackberries, cantaloupe, cherries, coconuts, currants, dates, figs, grapes, grapefruit, honeydew, lemons, limes, mushmelons, nectarines, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapples, raisins, raspberries, rhubarb, strawberries, tangerines, watermelon and tropical fruits.
Proteins
Most protein sources, such as red meat, are highly acidic; however, some protein sources are alkalizing. Some of the more alkalizing proteins include almonds, chestnuts, millet, tempeh, tofu and whey protein.
Spices and Seasonings
Spices and seasonings can also be alkalizing and are useful in balancing out the pH levels of everyday meals. If you have a meal that is slightly alkalizing, adding these spices will help bring it down to a more neutral level. Some alkalizing spices and seasonings include chili pepper, cinnamon, curry, ginger, miso, mustard, sea salt, tamari and other herbs.
Drinks
Beverages also have an acidic or alkaline value. Some of the more common drinks such as sodas and beers are extremely acidic. Some alkaline beverages include fresh fruit juice, green juice, mineral water and vegetable juice.
