Goal Setting for Senior Citizens

Goal setting is helpful tool for reaching milestones and goals because it holds you accountable. It can be a good instrument for keeping senior citizens active and healthy.

Realistic Goals

Goals must be realistic. If they are too out of range for your, you will never achieve them. As a senior citizen you aren’t going to be the faster person in the race. However, you may be the faster person in your age group.

Goal Steps

Map out the path you will take to reach your goal. Break it down into manageable steps. If your goal is to run a 5K race and you’ve never run one before, you need to create a plan for how you will be able to run that far. For example, you can start out by walking a certain distance with short distances of running thrown in. Your goal steps will have you increase your running while decreasing your walking with each outing.

Flexibility

Things are bound to happen that may make it hard to achieve your goal. You may experience a health problem that won’t allow you to meet your time table. Readjust your goals when this happens.

Work with Friends

Find a friend who you can share your goals with. Encourage each other and hold each other accountable. You will also have a support system for those times when reaching your goals seems out of reach.

Celebrating Progress

Celebrate your progress toward your goals by rewarding yourself. You don’t have to treat yourself to anything big but you should recognize what you’ve accomplished.
