How to Prevent a UTI During Pregnancy
The risk of a urinary tract infection (UTI) increases during pregnancy, and an infection can develop as early as week six. As the uterus increases in size, the additional weight doesn’t always allow the bladder to drain completely. An infection can develop, and women generally experience a variety of symptoms such as painful urination, frequent urination and abdominal pain. But fortunately, there are ways to prevent a UTI during pregnancy.
Increase your fluid intake. Water flushes toxins from the body, and it can flush bacteria from the urinary tract. Drink between six and eight glasses of water a day to prevent a UTI during pregnancy.
Consume cranberries. Cranberries naturally promote urinary health. Eat fresh cranberries to prevent a UTI, or drink several glasses of 100% cranberry juice throughout the day. Cranberry capsules also reduce the chances of an infection.
Take vitamin supplements. Supplements such as Vitamin C and zinc help the body fight a variety of infections, including UTIs. Purchase a multivitamin to boost your immune system, or take Vitamin C and zinc supplements.
Empty the bladder after intercourse. During intercourse, bacteria in the vaginal area can enter the urethra and cause a urinary tract infection. Urinating after intercourse flushes bacteria from the urinary tract and prevents an infection.
Keep the genital area dry. After bathing, swimming or urinating, completely dry the genital area. This prevents the growth of bacteria, and it lowers your risk of a UTI during pregnancy.
