Sore throats can be tough to deal with. While they are often attributed to some illness or another, they also occur randomly. Sometimes one’s throat just hurts. When throat pain occurs without warning it can be tough to know how to cure it, but it is possible and you don’t always have to see a doctor for a prescription. There are some effective home remedies for sore throats that are always worth a try before you fork out the money for a professional medical opinion.

Give Licorice a Try

Licorice is a natural herb that is often found in herbal remedies for sore throats. Throat coat has natural licorice in it, as do many of the teas that are designed to alleviate the pain of sore throat. Herbal teas and treatments containing licorice are good to use sporadically, but they are not approved for long term use as they have been known to aggravate certain medical conditions when used for long periods of time.

People with conditions like cancer, heart disease and diabetes should see their doctor before trying herbal remedies containing licorice.

Honeysuckle Flower

Honeysuckle flower is a type of herb that has been used in Chinese medicine for years. Not only does this remedy have a sweet-sounding name, but it tastes great as well. It can be made into tea and taken up to four times a day. Although it may be harder to find than some of the other herbs that have been known for healing,it can be found in Chinese medicine or herbal stores around town.

Marshmallow

Marshmallow has been known to be an effective sore throat pain reliever for a long time. While most people think of soft, white sugary food at the sound of the word “marshmallow,” the herbal version is nothing like that. Marshmallow is purchased in root form, and it can be used to make tea. It contains a substance called mucilage, which is known to coat throats and work as a pain reliever for sore throat pain.

Marshmallow tea can be taken up to four times a day for sore throat pain relief.
