Bladder infections are the second most common type of infection and account for over 8 million doctor’s visits a year, according the National Kidney Disease Clearinghouse. Catching a bladder infection early is the key to quick recovery, so it is important to know the symptoms.

Frequent Urination

Making frequent trips to the bathroom with small or virtually no urinary output is one of the first signs of an infection.

Pain/Burning While Urinating

A bladder infection will cause painful urination. It may feel like a stinging or burning that travels up the urethra during urination. The pain subsides as soon as urination ceases.

Foul Smelling/Cloudy Urine

The urine may have a strong and foul smell. It will also have a cloudy appearance or may even look dark yellow, brown or red.

Bladder Cramps

The bladder may experience urinal spasms during an infection. It will feel like the area just below the belly button and above the genitals is cramping. The pain will radiate throughout the urinary tract.

Nausea and Fever

In some cases of infection, you may experience nausea and fever. This is a sure sign that you should see a doctor immediately or risk a severe kidney infection.
