Take steps to prevent urinary tract infections. Prevention is always the best medicine, especially if you want to avoid medical treatment and prescription antibiotics. There are many ways to do this. The most important things to remember are to drink plenty of water and to urinate frequently. Holding in urine can give bacteria a chance to reproduce. Drinking a lot of water will help flush out the system. Women are more prone to urinary tract infections, simply because of anatomy. It is easier for bacteria to enter. Women should take special precautions like cleaning the vaginal area before and after sex and wiping thoroughly after bowel movements.
Hydrate
Keep yourself well-hydrated. One of the most important things you can do to help control a urinary tract infection is to drink plenty of water. The water will help flush bacteria out of your body. It will make you have the urge to urinate more frequently, voiding the body of the germs and any other substances that may be causing irritation. Kimberly Workowski, M.D., of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University recommends drinking at least eight glasses of water per day. The best indicator of whether you are getting enough water is to look at the color of your urine. It should be almost clear and colorless. If it is bright yellow, drink more water.
Cranberry Juice
Turn to a tried-and-true home remedy for some relief from a urinary tract infection. Probably the most common and most effective remedy is cranberry juice. Plenty of experience has shown that many people with urinary tract infections can benefit by drinking this juice. The Journal of the American Medical Association claims that the juice keeps bacteria from sticking to the cells of the urinary tract. This way, they are more easily flushed out. Try drinking cranberry juice the next time you feel a urinary tract infection coming on.
What to Avoid
Avoid certain foods and behaviors when you have a urinary tract infection. Certain foods should be avoided that may cause irritation to the lining of the urinary tract. Some examples are citrus fruits, tomatoes, spicy foods, chocolate and some cheeses. Other substances like nicotine, alcohol and caffeine can cause more pain. Avoid tight-fitting clothing, which can force bacteria up into the body and cut down on air circulation. Also, sprays and douches can further irritate a urinary tract infection and throw off the pH balance.
