Ways to Clear Up Perioral Dermatitis Quickly

Perioral dermatitis is a skin condition characterized by redness and small pupules (bumps) around the mouth. Often appearing like acne, these unpleasant symptoms surround the mouth except for a small band of healthy skin around the lips. Most commonly found in women, this condition can be treated by regular use of topical creams. When untreated, symptoms may last for months or years.

Causes

Several actions have been shown to increase your risk for developing perioral dermatitis. Excessive heat and wind can exacerbate the symptoms. Certain skin care products, especially ointments, can stimulate the development of the pupules. Check if your facial products contain petrolatum or paraffin; these compounds can cause the symptoms. Certain oral contraceptives may also be causative. Ask your dermatologist if your skin care products may be contributing to your perioral dermatitis.

Diet

Inflammatory conditions such as perioral dermatitis are exacerbated by hot foods and alcohol. Avoiding these may accelerate your recovery.

Treatment

Your dermatologist may recommend ceasing use of all cosmetic products to eliminate the cause of the symptoms. This is the quickest way to clear up perioral dermatitis. If you are reluctant to give up your cosmetic practices, there are medical options available. Unfortunately, all topical treatments will cause an initial inflammation of the pupules. After thorough and repeated treatment with medication, however, the perioral dermatitis should recede. The two most effective drugs are doxycycline and minocycline. However, this condition is often chronic, possibly resurfacing after treatment is completed.

Precautions

If you are pregnant, please consult your physician before beginning medication; certain medications, such as doxycycline, may not be right for you.
