Those who choose to eat mainly alkaline foods are usually doing so in an attempt to reduce the amount of acid in their body. Too much acid has been associated with conditions such as diabetes and stomach ailments like ulcers.

Types

Alkalizing foods include fermented tofu, chicken breast, millet, sunflower seeds, almonds, mushrooms, peas, grapes, dates, figs, miso, sea salt and the sweetener Stevia.

Warning

Distilled water may not be an ideal beverage for an alkaline diet, because some tests have shown it has elements of acidity. Mineral water is considered a better choice.

Benefits

Eating alkaline based foods can ensure good bone health and prevent loss of muscle mass, according to Dr. Susan E. Brown, who treats and blogs about osteoporosis.

Effects

Alkaline foods, which also include artichokes, olive oil, cayenne pepper, grape juice, tomatoes, and apple cider vinegar, also help the body eliminate liquid waste (urine) more efficiently.
