Most tapeworm infestations in humans can be treated easily. If you consume tapeworm larvae accidentally, the tapeworms usually grow in your intestines. These tapeworms can be killed easily with medication. If you consume tapeworm eggs, the condition may be more serious. When the eggs grow into larvae, they can migrate into other parts of your body, including the liver or lungs. The larvae can form cysts in these organs, which might be life threatening.
Praziquantel
Praziquantel is a generic oral medication that can kill tapeworms in your intestines. It is also available under the brand name Biltricide. Praziquantel usually comes in tablet form, and you should take it exactly as directed by your doctor, usually with a meal. Possible side effects include hive, fever, dizziness and stomach upset. You should not take Prazinquantel if you are taking anti-seizure medication or are breast feeding an infant.
Albendazole
Albendazole (Albenza) is another oral medication used to treat tapeworms in intestines. Like Praziquantel, Ablendazole comes in oral tablet form, and you should take it with food, as directed by your doctor. Possible side effects include susceptibility to bruising or bleeding, weakness, chills, fever, stomach problems or temporary hair loss. Albendazole should not be taken if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, or if you have a history of liver problems.
Tapeworms Outside the Digestive Tract
If tapeworms spread outside your digestive tract to the lungs or liver, more serious treatment may be necessary. You may be prescribed anti-inflammatory steroids to diminish swelling of your organs affected by tapeworms. In some cases, your doctor may have to perform surgery to remove tapeworm or cysts caused by tapeworms.
